The Clifton House, built in 1878, was conveniently located on the south-westerly corner of Germain and Princess St. The brick building stood four stories tall and 40x80 feet in dimension. The Clifton House soon became one of the most popular and beautiful accommodations in Saint John.
"We arrived here about 2.30 our time, 3.30 by this.
This is the Hotel where we are. Wish you could see this place, St. John. It is
altogether different from anything in our land. Wish I could tell you where we
were.....so I could here from you. Hope everything will go well with you &
you are having a good time. Mother
Tues, Aug 17, 1915."
The Hotel included an office and reading, smoking and sitting rooms as well as
rooms en suite with bath. Each room, including some thirty bright and spacious
bedrooms, was heated with steam and lighted by gas. Electric bells with
speaking tubes were located in each corridor to communicate with the kitchen.
The Clifton House was passed between many owners before it accomodated a refrigerator company in 1946 and then a tavern and the Spectrum Teen Club in 1992, the same year it was demolished. Now this location, the corner of Germain and Princess St., contains an empty lot.
