Researching Saint John's Building Histories

Saint John is rich in heritage ranging from outstanding sites of natural beauty to our many historic sites. Prominent to visitors and residents alike are our thousands of heritage buildings, with architectural styles ranging from the 18th century Georgian style, to the modern designs of our new construction. As prominent as these buildings are, and as proud as we are of our heritage, you would think it was a simple matter to do research on a particular building - to discover its history, find out who built it, who designed it. If only that were true!

While some of the more prominent buildings, or buildings with rich or famous owners, have been well documented, such is not the case with the majority of buildings in Saint John. In some cases it is only a matter of doing original research on a property which no one has done before. But in many cases, it is simply a matter of too few original records having survived. Disasters such as floods, or ignorance on the part of government officials or property owners who carelessly discard old papers as meaningless and unimportant, have made it difficult to do this form of historical research.

In this section you will discover something about a variety of buildings in Saint John. The level of documentation differs for all properties. In some cases it may be nothing more than a list of previous property owners and building residents. In others, it could include information on the building designer and/or builder. It might include architectural drawings, or photographs. It is rare to research a property in Saint John where one would find architectural drawings, information on the builder and construction details, historic photographs and information on the property owners.

Visitors to this site are encouraged to submit information about their own homes, with similar information found about these properties.
