Since there was only a
hangar at Millidgeville and no barracks, the men either lived at home or rented
rooms over most of the city's centre. Gordon LaRocque, who arrived in Saint
John with the 2nd A.C., was responsible for transporting the airmen from the
SMT bus terminal on King St. to the airport in Millidgeville. Officers of the
unit stayed at the Admiral Beatty Hotel and were taken to the airport by staff
drivers.
In 1941, a new hangar and a barracks administration
building were completed at the southern end of the airfield, with the main
entrance off the Boar's Head Road. Barracks were built on the other side of
Millidgeville Ave., opposite of the municipal hangar. The new barracks housed
the army personnel (Cape Breton Highlanders who guarded the airport) and the
airmen. The hangar is now the home to Waypak Inc., formerly Wayside Industries
located on Woodward Ave.
