Courtenay Bay Breakwater Battery

Aerial view of Courtenay Bay Breakwater (August 25, 1943)This battery was located at the west endGunner Lawrence Perry and crew man an 18 pounder field gun during early WWII. (1939) of the Courtenay Bay breakwater, near the Saint John Drydock. In October, 1939, gunners of the 4th Coast Battery, 3rd N.B. Cost N.B. Coast Brigade R.C.A., placed an 18 pounder field gun at the end of the breakwater.

The role of this battery was to engage any motor-torpedo boats which might have been launched from a larger enemy vessel. ToThe gun atop the gantry was a twin 6 pounder. (1940) meet this objective, a variety of structures were built, including two searchlight emplacements, a Battery Observation Post and a permanent gun position.

In June of 1944, a new twin 6 pounder gun was installed, only to have the battery closed out on September 1, 1944.
