This
battery was located at the west end
of the Courtenay Bay
breakwater, near the Saint John Drydock. In October, 1939, gunners of the 4th
Coast Battery, 3rd N.B. Cost N.B. Coast Brigade R.C.A., placed an 18 pounder
field gun at the end of the breakwater.
The role of this battery was to engage any motor-torpedo boats which might
have been launched from a larger enemy vessel. To
meet this
objective, a variety of structures were built, including two searchlight
emplacements, a Battery Observation Post and a permanent gun position.
In June of 1944, a new twin 6 pounder gun was installed, only to have the battery closed out on September 1, 1944.
