Several open cars were built for Saint John by the Montreal Street Railway. These were the last 'single enders' to come to Saint John, and their arrival allowed retirement of the remaining Consolidated Electric Company's cars. The system carried no cars older than seven years at the turn of the century.
A shuttle between Main Street and the suspension bridge at Reversing Falls was opened on July 21st 1902. The opening awakened memories of un-fulfilled promises made in 1894. Editorials appeared in several newspapers criticizing the lack of improvements and extensions, promised , but which remained unbuilt by the street railway. In the summer of 1902 the company adopted a more progressive policy towards building new lines. Plans were made for the extension to Carlton on the west side of the harbour. Fixed car stops were arranged , abolishing the practice of stopping the car wherever a passenger hailed it. This new progressive policy for expansion continued for fifteen years.
