Jervis Bay Legion Part of World Wide Web

Contributed by TRUDY KELLY FORSYTHE
As Reported in the Remembrance Day Supplement, «Telegraph Journal», Tues. Nov.11, 1997

Last Wednesday evening, a sober occasion was followed by an exciting event for the members of the Jervis Bay Legion, Branch 53. That's when the New Brunswick Community College - Saint John officially launched the legion's website.

Joe Marriott, Instructor of Computer Programming Technology and College Webmaster, is the creator behind the site, which joins the many sites the college maintains. He explains he is always on the look-out for new content to keep the college site fresh.

The site originally began as a small project with a general tribute to commemorate Remembrance Day, but driving past Jervis Bay-Ross Memorial Park one day last summer, Mr. Marriott says he stopped in and was impressed with what he saw.

"I felt the work they did was worthy of being on the Internet," he says. "They've put a lot of work into this; it's really a nice spot."

Mr. Marriott explains that the first part of the site is the tribute to Canada's involvement in the First and Second World Wars and the Korea War. The second part is more local and includes a virtual representation of the park, as well as an explanation of the Park's monuments and other related information. "It's there for anyone in the world to see," says Mr. Marriott, adding the site also has links so people can find more information. An interesting link is to the National Books of Remembrance.

A tour of the site will take visitors five to ten minutes depending on how much time they spend reading, and then more time should be allotted for going through other links.

The date for last week's launch, Nov. 5, was appropriately the anniversary of the sinking of the HMS Jervis Bay. The launch of the website was preceded by the annual wreath-laying ceremony with surviving crew member Bob Squires at Ross Memorial Park.
