New Brunswick Community College, Saint John, N.B.

Currently Instructor of Computer Programming Technology in a dynamic two year diploma programme, primarily responsible for curriculum in C++ Object Oriented Programming, Visual C++, and Internet Development. Other aspects of the position encompass a wide range of duties, from various administrative details, curriculum development, industry liaison, service on various College commitees, etc., as can be expected from a programme which must remain current in a rapidly changing field.

Along with regular instructional duties, special projects of note undertaken over the last number of years include:

  • In December 2002, accompanied a student team to La Universidad de Cienfuegos, Cuba. This CIDA funded project resulted in the successful implementation of an automated Student Information system.

  • In January 2002, accompanied a student team to La Universidad de Cienfuegos, Cuba. This CIDA funded project resulted in the successful implementation of an automated Library Administration system.

  • Have taught contract industry level programming courses to companies such as NBTel, DMR Consulting, and NCH Promotions.

  • Architect of two community based websites which have received widespread acclaim; Heritage Resources Saint John, winner of a 1999 Heritage award from the City of Saint John, and Tourism Resources Saint John which was adopted by the City of Saint John as their unofficial tourism site until such time as their site was redeveloped.

  • Received a Certificate of Merit from the Royal Canadian Legion in 1998 recognizing my work on the website http://HMSJervisBay.com , which has created international ties between Saint John and the United Kingdom.

  • A key architect of a new 9 month Information Technology programme Business Information Technology Specialist which began in March 1997.

  • The full planning, implementation and ongoing development of the College website .

Public Speaker / Consultant

Combining experience in the Information Technology field, the Education field, and an insight into the unique social aspects of the Internet, have given a number of professional presentations to various organizations such as Enterprise Saint John, Saint John Board of Trade, and The City of Saint John. Speaker at a number of conferences such as the Atlantic Colleges Committee for Entrepreneurial Development Annual Conference and Saint John Small Business Week. Keynote speaker at 2000 Rotary Club Black Tie Dinner.

Have provided consultative services to a number of businesses and non-profit organizations regarding Web Strategies, most notably to date The City of Saint John and the Saint John Waterfront Development Partnership.

New Brunswick Housing Corporation, Fredericton, N.B.

Attained position of Project Leader within the Management Information Services Department. As one of two Project Leaders in the development section, responsibilities included systems analysis and design for new applications as well as maintenance and enhancement of existing software. Working in liaison with user departments on a variety of mortgage administration systems greatly increased general knowledge of accounting principles and project management techniques.

May 1979 - January 1983
Teldata Ltd., Saint John, N.B.

Held position of Programmer Analyst with the Software Design and Development section of Teldata, a division of the New Brunswick Telephone Company. Projects included development of a wide range of customized accounting packages, including payroll, accounts receivable, and general ledger systems. Job responsibilities involved extensive customer contact and on-site development, as well as the ability to work under a minimum of supervision. Working in a consulting environment provided a dynamic atmosphere for a development of a wide variety of skills.

May 1978 - May 1979
New Brunswick Housing Corporation, Fredericton, N.B.

Employed as one of three summer students to develop software for delivery of social housing programs. Reported directly to analyst under contract from Teldata Ltd. In August, was placed in supervisory capacity over two other summer students and commenced development of additional software under the Director of Data Processing - NBHC. Upon return to university in September, was retained on a contract basis.

Platforms (Hardware & Software)

University studies concentrated in the use of COBOL, FORTRAN, and PL/1, with exposure to APL and ASSEMBLER, on an IBM 370/158 under the OS/VS 1 operating system. Experience gained with Teldata was mainly concentrated in BASIC development on Data General and DEC minicomputer platforms. NB Housing projects involved COBOL development on a Unisys System 80 mainframe. NB Community College systems include minicomputer development on the DEC platforms (Vax, Alpha) under the Open/VMS operating system., Novell Netware 3.x & 4.x, Windows NT 4, and most major categories of PC based packages. As College Webmaster, also experienced in most aspects of Web platforms.
