Here is what newspapers of the day had to say about Foulis:
"On Wed. last the new Steam Boat St. George began to exert her
mechanical powers to the admiration of all the surrounding spectators; and we
feel it our duty to say that much credit is justly due to Mr. Foulis, the
Engineer, who put up the complicated yet compact Machinery."
"in the Director's Room, was the Philosophical Apparatus of the
Institute, under the very able superintendence of Mr. R. F., who delighted his
visitors with explanations and experiments, passing from one branch of science
to another, throughout the Exhibition, with wonderful perseverance and
dexterous manipulation."
"Mr. Foulis possesses a venerable appearance ... He is deeply read
in the problems of philosophy, and has a peculiar taste and talent for geology
and chemistry, - a real palaeotologist (sic)- and is as great an antiquarian in
that way as the poet is in his ... he led us into his scientific "SANCTUM
SANCTORUM" - a sort of geological grotto - where lay shelved in accurate
order innumerable specimens of an ancient antiquity; and their names he could
rattle off as fast as did Burns' "Bauld Apothecary".
