| I am the Black Diamond of the North, the rarest gem in the
domain of our Lady of the Snows.
For aeons I slumbered in the rugged Northern heights, ages before men trod
the corridors of Time.
Man has twice discovered me. First, he knew me not, nor dreamed of my
economic value or potential power. When next I smiled upon him, he paid me
assiduous court, and for thirty years basked in the lustre of my virgin beauty,
and fared sumptuously upon my bounty. Then, in caprice, I eluded him. He sought
me not again.
Foolish and deluded Man! Will his cupidity and ignorance forever prompt him
to turn his back upon the goose that lays the golden egg? Does the spirit of
Jason no longer live in the hearts of men?
I sustain and nourish Life. I replenish and restore the barren lands, and
render fertile the waste places of the earth. I fulfil the biblical injunction
and grow to blades of grass, where there grew but one. I clothe the gardens in
color and perfume, where maid and matron walk in beauty, and laughing children
play: all close to Him, who made me. I lend Life and Beauty and Inspiration.
I am Light, and Heat. Time was, when for a score of years and more, I
drifted an inky pillar of cloud by day and burst a million pillars of fire by
night, shedding my pellucid and effulgent rays upon the just and unjust, upon
the bond and free in the First City of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
I am the modern Motive Power. In engines of peace an war, I dart among the
clouds at lightning speed. Upon the earth, I annihilate distance and bring
wholesome pleasure to countless thousands. I navigate the waters of the earth
and their vasty depths. I am humanity's Right Hand.
I am Health. I render the anaemic rosy, the angular rotund. I banish apathy
and restore ambition. I spell success.
I bring to Womankind a priceless jewel; I enhance here beauty, and preserve
it against the ravages of time, I bring to her a knowledge old as Eve, and a
perfected art known only to Egyptian queens.
I am Potential Wealth. I rend from harassed and struggling humankind the
shackles of drudgery and fear. I render possible the pursuit of happiness.
Humanity needs me; I hear the Macedonian cry. In the rugged slopes of
Hopewell, where the sturdy yeoman first discovered me, I still abide. Hopewell!
the very name of prophecy. Is there none who would again gaze upon my pristine
beauty? Is there none to tap again my massive veins, for it is written that
through them courses a golden stream of wealth. Is there no adventurous soul to
tread the trail that Gould Hoar trod? "Seek and ye shall find."
I am the peerless hydrocarbon, ALBERTITE.
