The first church built on the Germain
Street site was completed in 1818. It was a wooden building, fronting on Queen
Street, with a seating capacity of between 500 and 600 souls.
Twenty years later, in 1838, the church was enlarged & remodeled. The
church was illuminated by 50 wax candles. Through the years the lighting was
improved by the addition of Sperm Oil lamps and then gas lamps in 1845.
In 1866 the original church was
replaced by a brick church at a cost of $40,000. The entrance was changed at
that time from Queen Street to Germain Street.
The brick church was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1877 and
rebuilt that same year. This new church had a seating capacity of about 850.
Gas was used to light the church until in 1906 electric lighting was
introduced.
In 1923, the "Willing
Workers" presented the church with a new Casavant Organ. While the organ
was installed and the church remodeled the church was closed for 5 months.
