Trinity Church: Church of the Loyalists

The original Trinity Church, 1791.
The original Trinity Church, 1791.
In 1783, as the American Revolutionary War drew to a close, those loyal to the crown of England left America and landed on the shores of New Brunswick at the mouth of the Saint John river. One of their first priorities was a church; the parishioners held services in a frame building until 1791, when their first church was finally completed. The first services were held in the building on Christmas Day of that year, and the building was consecrated on August 17th, 1792.

Sad but true....

John Venning, who built the clock tower and spire of the original church, slipped and fell to his death during the construction of that part of the church.

Old Trinity, 1860
In the Great Saint John Fire of 1877 the Old Trinity was among the many buildings consumed by the flames. Nothing remained of the wooden structure except a pair of pillars and their capitals. Only the communion vessels, the parish registers, and the church's coat of arms, which was said to have been brought over with the Loyalists, were rescued from the building.
