Fort Mispec

«"Show Me Where"»

Gunner Tom Patrick of Hampton, NB (1942)

In August 1939, authority was granted to construct a three gun emplacement for 7.5 inch guns at Mispec Point. This battery was major counter-bombardment position for the Saint John defences. In July 1940, gunners of the 4th Battery, 3rd NB Coast Brigade, RCA had the guns in action. The battery consisted of an observation post, a power house, and wooden baracks. The camouflage scheme was to make the fort resemble a fishing village.

Additionally, the Royal Canadian Navy's Port War Signal Station was located here. This was the nerve center in the navy's communication system. Other defences included a detachment of infantry quartered at the head of the road, and it is believed that two Bofors anti-aircraft guns were positioned here also.

The Irving Oil Canaport is located at the site today. All the concrete gun emplacements and shelters have survived. In the early 1970's, Irving Oil established a small park at the site, but heavy vandalism has destroyed this.
