By the end of the American Revolution (1775-1783), the southern colonies had won their independence from Britain and formed the United States of America. Thousands of British colonists, the Loyalists, fled for British territory. In the spring of 1783, many of the Loyalists landed at the mouth of the Saint John River.
As time went by, their numbers grew to over 15,000. The community of Parrtown was created. By the request of the Loyalists, in 1784, a new colony with a new governor was created called New Brunswick. Parrtown became the «City of Saint John, Canada's first official city» .
Again, as Saint John's population grew, the Micmac and Maliseet were forced from their lands and moved to reserves. Many natives died from exposure to diseases brought by the new immigrants.
