For many, the City of Lancaster lasted
less than one generation. Incorporated as Canadas newest city on January
1, 1953, Lancaster was swallowed up in an amalgamation with Canadas
oldest city, Saint John, on January 1, 1967, Canadas centennial year. For
over thirty years the name Lancaster has conjured up images of that part of
Saint John now known as the West Side, or Saint John West, two appellations
which also mean different things for other older residents of the city.
Today the name lives on at the Lancaster Mall, or the Lancaster Centennial
Arena, or with some of the local sports teams. For literally thousands of
others, the name Lancaster evokes images of the former communities of
Fairville, Beaconsfield, Randolph and Milford, and for some, even South Bay.
These communities, in and of themselves, had amalgamated to form Lancaster in
1953.
