Probably nobody in Saint John is as ferocious at
remembering their heritage as the West Siders. Even today, some kindergarten
children identify as living in Fairville, a hand-over from their
grandparents days! While these children may use the name, only their
parents and grandparents will remember familiar area politicians like Tommy
Horsier, Bill Golding, Bert Huestis and Hartley Green; businessmen like George
Chittick, Las Spragg, Parker Mitchell, C.N. Nelson or Russell Webb, or
residents like Tom Butler, Albert Perry, Lyman Purneli, Paul Phillips or Louis
Poirier, and countless others. Gone are the Fairville Fountain, the Fairville
department store, Willard Moores grocery, Buzz Devennes Champlain
Street grocery, Purdy Sales & Service and Boyles Hardware - the list could
go on and on.
The D.V.A. hospital is gone, as is the Protestant Orphanage. The Provincial
Hospital (later Centracare) was a fixture on Lancaster Heights from 1848 until
its relocation in 1998. Stalwarts of the local economy, T.S. Simms and
Moosehead Brewery, still remain true to their location.
While gone, the people, businesses and events of Lancaster, are not forgotten.
A browse through these pages will rekindle the sights, sounds and emotions of
this proud community of communities!
