On January 1st, 1953, the City of Lancaster became the newest and youngest of
the cities of Canada. With a population of over 10 000, it was New Brunswick's
fifth city."
"CANADA'S NEWEST
CITY IS BORN!" was the banner of the first newspaper of the new city:
The Lancaster Advertiser. With fifteen pages full of interesting
articles pertaining to the city, it stands today as an important historical
bookmark of Saint John. Costing only 10 cents, it introduced the new mayor and
council, the new educational facilities, and the new opportunities.
The mayor of the city was Mayor T. B.
Horsler. He, the deputy mayor, B. W. Huestis, and the aldermen, were sworn in
on December 2nd of the previous year. The oaths were taken in the
"spacious auditorium" of the new Barnhill Memorial School while Judge
Reginald D. Kierstead administered the oaths. The picture shows the unveiling
of the crest in 1953 .
