"CANADA'S NEWEST CITY IS BORN!"


On January 1st, 1953, the City of Lancaster became the newest and youngest of the cities of Canada. With a population of over 10 000, it was New Brunswick's fifth city."

Click for an Enlarged Lancaster Advertiser published January 1, 1953!"CANADA'S NEWEST CITY IS BORN!" was the banner of the first newspaper of the new city: The Lancaster Advertiser. With fifteen pages full of interesting articles pertaining to the city, it stands today as an important historical bookmark of Saint John. Costing only 10 cents, it introduced the new mayor and council, the new educational facilities, and the new opportunities.

Click for an Enlarged Unveiling of the Crest of Lancaster!The mayor of the city was Mayor T. B. Horsler. He, the deputy mayor, B. W. Huestis, and the aldermen, were sworn in on December 2nd of the previous year. The oaths were taken in the "spacious auditorium" of the new Barnhill Memorial School while Judge Reginald D. Kierstead administered the oaths. The picture shows the unveiling of the crest in 1953 .
