The
Protective Services of the area known as Lancaster stems back to the 1900s.
Here is a picture of the Fairville Fire Department during the Jubilee of Queen
Victoria in 1847. Whenever the Fairville Fire Department is not out saving
lives they seem to either be in a parade or preparing for one.
Here is another parade that took place
on July 1, 1927. This is the celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of
Confederation. In the center of the picture is Willis Lodge #70 which is now
the location of an Esso gas station.
The City of Lancaster was not without its own
police force and among the force was one of the town's most memorable
characters. His name was Harold Mayes. Early in his career, he experienced an
automobile accident where the cause was reckless driving. After this
experience, he made it his life's work to make sure that this would never
happen again. Harold Mayes did his part by only allowing perfect drivers behind
the wheel of a car. When they took a ride with Constable Harold Mayes, they
were lucky to get their license on the first try.
