In 1993 Centracare came under the direction of the
Region 2 Hospital Corporation, which eventually becameThe Atlantic Health
Sciences Corporation(AHSC), and operated as one of the Corporation's 12
hospitals/active care centres stretching from Sussex to St. Stephen.
In January of 1996, there was a further change of management direction when
AHSC switched from a facility-based to a program-based management structure,
and Linda Nice, Administrative Director of Mental Health and Addictions,
assumed charge of Centracare. She oversaw the last months of care for patients
and the closure of the 150-year-old institution.
In April of 1997 tenders closed for the construction of a $4.4
million facility to replace the original Lunatic Asylum at a South Bay
location.
The South Bay facility is for just 50 patients. Its focus is to provide highly
specialized tertiary level psychogeriatric and psychosocial rehabilitation
services as an integral part of a continuum of mental health care that also
includes the active services of the Saint John Regional Hospital and Community
Mental Health Clinics.
