Decorative painting in Saint John
dates back to as early as 1790, although not mentioned in newspaper
advertisements until around 1820. This was the period when newspaper
advertisements became more common for painters and ornamental plasterers, thus
providing evidence of their presence in Saint John.
In 1820 John Munro advertised his skills for making or modifying plaster
ornaments for cornices or ceilings as well as plastering the exterior of a
building on either stone, or brick. He also stated that he could paint or draw
"in anitation of stone". This is the earliest known indication that a
form of trompe l'oeil decoration was being offered in the city.
