From a world
perspective we can trace trompe l'oeil and decorative painting back to
classical antiquity. The Villa of Mysteries at Pompeiishows many examples of
how the classical artist used this technique to emphasis the wall's surface. As
a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius many of these still exist in
excellent condition today. They give the viewer a window to the past and show
the style popular during this period.
During the Renaissance, many great houses and churches of Europe employed great
artists of the day to produce stunning masterpieces. The church's concern was
mainly to embellish the house of God and to give it the splendor they felt it
deserved.
