Lower Cove/Barrack Green

«"Show Me Where"»

The Barrack Green, located at Lower Cove, was the major military property in Saint John. The first gun batteries on this site were built in 1793, and a variety of wooden and stone buildings have been erected over the years. The Saint John fire of 1877 destroyed most of the buildings on the Barrack Green.

Just prior to World War I the armoury at Lower Cove was built. The brick building replaced most of the existing buildings and became the focal point of the Saint John Garrison. The armouries served during the First World War as the Garrison headquarters while the Barrack Green grounds became a training establishment. Between the wars the armouries returned to peacetime duties as a drill hall, storage area, and administrative center for the militia.

During World War II the armouries served as Fortress Headquarters and as headquarters for the 3rd New Brunswick Coast Brigade. Early in the war it had also served as the Fire Command Post for the coast artillery but this function was transferred to the Carleton Martello Tower later in the war. The Barrack Green was the site for the Canadian Provost Corps Military Detention Barracks and a variety of other units such as the Royal Canadian Engineers, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, and the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. The Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps was also located at the Barrack Green but moved to Coldbrook during the war.

The following militia units were quartered at the armouries: the 3rdField Artillery Regiment (The Loyal Company), 31 Service Battalion, and the 722 Communications Squadron.
