Page 4 The Forts Martignon, St. Jean,
Menagouche, and Frederick
Several fortifications built on the same site through the 17th and 18th centuries; a National Historic Site.
Page 5 Fort Howe Fort Howe was born during the American Revolution, with additions being added from that era until WWII. It has been designated as a National Historic Site.
Page 6 Lower Cove / Barrack Green Built during the 18th century, the Barrack Green was destroyed by fire in the 19th century. The early 20th century saw the Lower Cove armoury built. This area served as a focal point during WWI and WWII.
Page 7 Red Head Battery A WWI training ground and WWII dummy position, this battery originated in the 19th century.
Page 8 Drummond Blockhouse Dating from the War of 1812, this site last saw action in 1866.
Page 9 Carleton Martello Tower Stemming from the War of 1812, it was manned during the Fenian Raids. Some of this National Historic Site's roles have been as a WWI Detention Centre and WWII anti-aircraft position / Fire Command Post.
Page 10 Partridge Island Battery Born in the 18th century, this important site saw military service over a 147 year period. Today, only about two dozen of its structures are still visible.
Page 11 Camp Torryburn A military summer training camp opened in the 1860's, it has seen little use since the beginning of the 20th century.
Page 12 Negro Point / Dufferin Battery Built in the 1860's in response to fears of an American invasion, it has served as a training area, artillery position, and gravel pit!
Page 13 Courtenay Bay Breakwater Battery This battery was used to engage motor-torpedo boats. It was closed in late 1944.
Page 14 Fort Mispec A major counter-bombardment position for Saint John, this was also the focal point of the Royal Canadian Navy's wartime communications.
Page 15 Sheldon Point Dummy Battery This battery served as a decoy for potential enemy attack.
Page 16 East End Grounds This area served as quarters for several active and reserve units.
