End Of The Line

Joseph needham drove No 142 on its last run.The tram era in Saint John ended without fanfare Saturday August 7th 1948. Trolley wires were taken down and buses replaced the service. The rolling stock owned by the street railway did not receive much special attention either. The trucks were scrapped before selling the car bodies. Most of the car bodies ended up in fields to be forgotten and deteriorate. Some became convenient buildings for storage and other purposes for a time.Control handle from car no. 142.

Two streetcars fashioned into a house, and one abandoned in a field.Busses take over as the track is removed.

The Canadian Railway Museum at Delson, Quebec rescued car No. 82. Extensive work was done in 1971 and 1972 to restore the car body to its 1930's appearance. The only example of a streetcar from the Maritimes, and further opportunity has been lost. Or has it?
