Bev's Story !


Capt. B. R. Amstrong

Beverley Robinson Armstrong was born in February 19, 1875 in Saint John, New Brunswick. His father, Judge John R. Armstrong, was Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Beverley’s mother was Louisa Robinson.

Bev joined the Regiment in 1889 and served six years as a Gunner and Bugler until his commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant on July 28, 1894. In 1900 Bev resigned his Captaincy to serve with 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles in South Africa. He was wounded in the right foot which was later amputated.

On July 06, 1910 Bev married Wenefrede Lloyd-Jones and lived in Rothesay. In 1914, their first son Hugh was born. (The first child was a girl but she died at 3 yrs old.) On September 22, 1912, Bev was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He commanded the 3rd at Partridge Island at the beginning of war in 1914. In 1916 he was appointed Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General of Military District 6 in Halifax.

Bev proceeded to England in July, 1916 and returned to Halifax one month later. Bev achieved a number of awards during his Military Service, such as the Queen’s South African Medal with four clasps, 1914-18 British War Medal, George V Coronation Medal, George VI Coronation Medal, Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officer’s Decoration.

Bev commanded the Regiment until 1921. His sons, Hugh and David (born 1918), served with the unit during World War II. David became Commanding Officer in the 1950's.


Back home, Bev was also very active in his civilian career, he attended Bishops College, UNB and Kings College Law School. He became a well respected lawyer and insurance broker. He formed an insurance and real estate partnership with Hugh Bruce which carried on under the name Armstrong & Bruce. He was also the Director of Fernhill Cemetery; the Treasurer of the Old Ladies Home; a member of Riverside Golf and Country Club, The Union Club, St. Georges Society, and the N.B. Loyalist Society. Beverly served as President of the N.B. Division of the War Amps of Canada. Saint John & Sussex detachments of 2 contingent.

Beverly Robinson Armstrong died on June 29, 1945 and is buried in Fernhill cemetery.
