The Beginning of a Railway

A Railway Begins - Confederation

The beginning of the railway began with the forming of the European & North American Railway Company. This company was formed to build a railway between Saint John and Map«Shediac». In the 1860's, British and Canadian leaders sought the unification of the British colonies in what is today's eastern Canada.

Today, the Saint John Port is linked by 2 rail lines. «Canadian National (CN)» serves the east side of the port while NB Southern Railroad serves the west side.

New Brunswick and Nova Scotia needed funding to complete their railways, and thought this funding would come from Britain if they united. In 1867, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Quebec, and Ontario entered Confederation as provinces of the Dominion of Canada.
