The Birth of the Port

A Port is Born

The Loyalists realized that New Brunswick's forests were very valuable since wooden ships were the only means of travel. Thus, the Loyalists developed a shipbuilding and lumber trade. Loggers cut trees down in the inland areas, and then floated these logs down the St. John River to Saint John. It was a perfect place for a port and shipbuilding facility. The Port of Saint John was born.
